Show Your Super Powers ⚡

After the buzz of last Sunday’s 800m freestyle — with an incredible 86 swimmers taking on one of the toughest events in the pool — we’re ready to launch into the first full block of this year’s Club Championships.

This Sunday we kick off with a one-day meet, before the main full weekend on 12/13 October.

🏊 This Sunday’s Event Schedule

Morning: 200 Fly • 50 Back • 100 Breast Afternoon: 200 Back • 50 Fly • 100 Freestyle

💬 Lead Official Comment:“That’s a tough programme — from the experienced swimmer testing out the 200 Fly and maintaining form, to the newbies hoping to all avoid DQs in the technical swims of Breaststroke and Fly”

👶 New Swimmers, First Races

One of the most exciting parts of Club Champs is seeing our newest and youngest swimmers racing for the very first time — some as young as six years old!

For many, it’s the very beginning of their competitive swimming journey: stepping up behind the blocks, hearing the starter, and diving into the pool with teammates alongside them. These first swims are unforgettable — a mix of nerves, excitement, and pride as they complete a race in a proper competition setting.

It’s also a chance for young swimmers to get used to the flow of a meet in a friendly, supportive environment. They’ll learn how marshalling works, when to listen for the starter’s whistle, and how to follow the routines that will soon feel second nature.

And of course, all of them will be trying their best — and hoping to take home one of those shiny Bluefins medals🏅🐬💙. For some, the dream might even stretch to one day earning the famous Bluefins Pink Hat — our badge of record-breaking success.

But for now, whether it’s about chasing a medal, swimming fast, or simply finishing their first 50m under race conditions, every swim is a step forward. From PB chasers to first-timers, these moments capture what Club Champs is all about: progress, confidence, and the shared spirit of racing together.

🦸‍♂️ The 3 Super Powers: Sleep 💤 Nutrition 🥕 Hydration💧

Behind every strong swim, there are three superpowers that make all the difference. Master these, and you’ll have the edge when it matters most:

💤 Sleep Superpowers

  • Super Speed Recharge: Getting 9–10 hours of sleep can make you faster! Studies show it improves reaction times off the blocks by up to 0.15 seconds and even decreases sprint times.

  • The Muscle Rebuilder: While you sleep, your body releases growth hormones that repair and rebuild your muscles, making you stronger for the next day’s race.

  • The Power-Up Nap: A quick 20–30 minute nap between sessions can boost energy, sharpen focus, and keep you race-ready.

🥕 Nutrition Superpowers

  • The Energy Bank: Carbohydrates are your main fuel. Eating complex carbs (like pasta, rice, or oats) the day before a race fills your energy bank so you can power through every length.

  • The Muscle Mender: Protein helps repair and rebuild muscles after tough sets or races, speeding recovery and keeping soreness at bay. Good sources include chicken, eggs, tuna, or beans.

  • The Perfect Breakfast: Think porridge with fruit — light, slow-release energy that fuels you without weighing you down.

  • The Between-Races Refueler: Easy snacks — like a banana, oat bar, or cheese sandwich — give quick, digestible energy to keep you firing across multiple races.

💧 Hydration Superpowers

  • The Performance Enhancer: Proper hydration makes muscles work more efficiently, boosting endurance and stroke power.

  • The Mental Sharpener: Even mild dehydration causes “brain fog” and poor focus. Staying hydrated keeps your technique sharp and race plan clear.

  • The Joint Lubricator: Water helps protect and lubricate joints — crucial for smooth, powerful strokes and reducing injury risk.

  • The Pee Test: Quick check: pale yellow = good. Dark yellow = drink more!

💬 Scientific Comment:"Did you know you can lose up to a litre of sweat for every hour you train in the pool? Even though you’re surrounded by water, your body is still sweating to cool itself down. If you don’t replace fluids and electrolytes — tiny minerals that help your muscles contract — your strokes can start to feel weaker because your muscles aren’t firing as strongly"

✨ Poolside Wins!

Last week wasn’t just about the racing — there were big victories behind the scenes too:

  • Our new tech team ran their first meet together — full kit in action, a newly refurbed scoreboard, and syncing results live to MeetMobile.

  • Our officials were out in force — including many new Timekeepers, J1 trainees, and newly qualified J1s.

  • Even the lap counters had their moment… a new gadget for some, with the odd number flipped the wrong way 😅.

💬 Parent Comment:“I never knew how much was involved in running a gala. I’m now a J1 and loving watching all the action"

These contributions matter — without officials, tech, and volunteers, we couldn’t run a meet of any size.

Unfortunately, it’s too late to arrange for this weekend, but you could be ready for your part in future… 👉 Message Fleur, or speak to Sarah, our Officials Coordinator — you’ll usually find them both on poolside most evenings. We’ll give you full support, pair you with a mentor, and even cover course costs for volunteers. It’s a great way to be part of the action and make a real difference.
