Inclusive and Disability Swimming: The Sharks Squad

The Sharks Squad is Basingstoke Bluefins’ dedicated disability and inclusive swimming programme. Established in 2005, Sharks provides a safe, structured and supportive environment for children and young people aged 7–18+.

Sharks sits within the wider Bluefins pathway and follows the same principles as every other squad in the club. Progression is based on readiness, steady skill development and appropriate challenge, with each swimmer supported at a pace that suits their individual development.

Our Inclusive and Disability programme supports swimmers with physical, sensory, learning or communication differences, those who benefit from smaller group settings and clear structure, and those building confidence before moving into mainstream squads. Families are welcome to speak with us to decide whether Sharks is the right fit.

Our Approach

Sessions are calm, predictable and well organised. Many of our swimmers benefit from clear routines and consistent expectations, so we prioritise structure that reduces anxiety and builds independence over time.

As with all Bluefins squads, low swimmer-to-coach ratios allow teaching to be precise and responsive. Within Sharks this ensures swimmers develop stronger stroke technique, improved coordination, clearer communication skills and greater personal confidence.

The programme is led by Tony Bamberger, Head of Disability and Inclusion Swimming, supported by qualified teachers, experienced assistants and junior volunteers. The team understands that development is individual and progress does not follow a single timeline.

We welcome swimmers from special and mainstream schools and colleges across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.

Competition and Achievement

For swimmers who would like to compete, appropriate and supportive opportunities are available.

Sharks Gala
An optional annual members-only event that introduces racing in a familiar and low-pressure setting.

Para-Swimming Pathway
We support swimmers through classification guidance and competition planning where appropriate. In 2026, two Sharks swimmers were selected for the National Para-Swimming assessment and training weekend. Both swimmers were successfully classified and are now eligible to compete in para meets and in multi-classified events within mainstream competitions, subject to qualification standards.

Special Olympics
Six Sharks athletes have represented the South of England at the Special Olympics in Sheffield.

Schools Gala
Each year we host a Special Schools Gala for local schools including Dove House Academy, Limington House, Maple Ridge and Saxon Wood. The event is regularly attended by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane. We are grateful to Dove House Academy and the Basingstoke Aquadrome for their ongoing support.

Community

Sharks swimmers contribute positively to the wider community through participation and fundraising.

Lions Club Basingstoke Swimathon
Relay teams regularly raise over £1,000 each year for charity, supported by Basingstoke Sports Centre.

Annual Awards
The Lions Club Trophy recognises the most improved swimmer each year. Team Captaincy Trophies acknowledge commitment and positive team culture. Achievement Certificates mark individual progress across the squad.

Growth and Progression

For some swimmers, Sharks is a long-term home. For others, it becomes a stepping stone into different parts of the club.

Some swimmers move into mainstream Bluefins squads including Skills Academy, Competitive Development and Masters. Para performance pathways are available within our County Development and Performance squads.

Movement between squads is based on readiness and confidence. The aim is steady, sustainable development within one connected club structure.

“The swimming club brings out the best in me and my ability, with great people and training in a positive and friendly environment.”
