Water Polo at Bluefins

Fast. Fierce. Team First.

Water Polo at Bluefins combines swimming fitness, teamwork, movement and strategy within a fast-paced team sport.

It provides a different aquatic challenge for swimmers and players who enjoy learning new skills, working with others and becoming more confident in the water.

Strong swimming skills provide the foundation for Water Polo. Developing those skills alongside passing, movement and game awareness helps players become more confident and effective within the sport.

Whether you are discovering Water Polo for the first time or returning to the game, Bluefins provides opportunities to train, develop and become part of a team.

The Bluefins Water Polo Pathway

The Bluefins Water Polo pathway supports players from their first experience of the sport through to junior competition and senior training.

Players may enter at different stages according to their age, swimming experience and previous involvement in Water Polo.

Bluefins provides three main coaching environments, supported by links with clubs and networks across the South East:

  • Water Polo Academy

  • Juniors

  • Seniors

Each environment has a clear purpose, helping players develop their swimming, movement, teamwork and understanding of the game.

Academy Squad (Ages 9–13)

Where It All Begins

The Bluefins Water Polo Academy provides a welcoming introduction to the sport.

Sessions focus on movement, passing, ball skills and teamwork, using progressive activities and small-sided games to introduce the foundations of play.

Weekly sessions take place at Basingstoke Aquadrome, combining technical development with opportunities to apply skills within simple match situations.

Players may join from different parts of the Bluefins swimming programme or from outside the club. Academy players are encouraged to continue developing their swimming alongside Water Polo because strong swimming skills underpin movement, control and confidence within the game.

Swim England introduces mini-polo within the later stages of Learn to Swim. Bluefins builds on these early experiences through structured Academy sessions designed to develop confidence, understanding and enjoyment.

Junior Squad (Ages 12–18)

Developing Competitive Experience

The Junior programme supports players as they develop from introductory games towards more structured competition.

Sessions continue developing swimming fitness, passing, movement and game awareness while introducing greater tactical understanding and responsibility within the team.

Junior players are encouraged to continue swimming alongside Water Polo where appropriate. This supports the fitness, control and technical swimming skills needed within training and competition.

Water Polo Seniors

Adult Training

Bluefins provides weekly training for adult players who want to remain active, improve their skills and take part in a supportive team environment.

Sessions include technical work, tactical activities, conditioning and match play, with opportunities to take part in local and regional competition where appropriate.

Bluefins also maintains links with Southampton Water Polo, including Southampton Sirens and Southampton Men. These relationships can provide committed players with opportunities to experience higher-level Water Polo while continuing to train locally in Basingstoke.

A Connected Water Polo Programme

From Academy through to Juniors and Seniors, each part of the programme helps players continue developing within the sport.

Bluefins is part of the Hampshire Water Polo Network, sharing coaching knowledge, supporting joint match opportunities and working with clubs across the region.

These connections provide players with wider opportunities to train, compete and learn while remaining part of the Bluefins community.

Players may take part for competition, fitness, enjoyment or continued personal development.
