Train Like a Pro – Top Athlete
Aligned with the Optimal Athlete Development Framework (OADF)
The focus is on readiness, skill discipline, appropriate effort and learning.
These behaviours underpin long-term development and high-quality performance for every swimmer at Bluefins and are brought to life through our Train Like a Pro standard.
The Top Athlete Gold Hat recognises swimmers who consistently demonstrate outstanding training behaviours across preparation, execution and reflection. It is not awarded for times, medals or single performances, but for how a swimmer trains consistently, session after session.
The focus is on how training is approached and owned. Swimmers who meet this standard show independence, discipline and purpose in how they prepare, train and reflect.
The Gold Hat is accessible to every swimmer, regardless of age, speed or squad. It is awarded by coaches based on observed behaviours over time, using clear, shared criteria.
Train Like a Pro – Every day
The standard sets out what this looks like in practice, every session.
BEFORE I GET WET
-
Am I on time, prepared and ready to train?
-
Have I completed my land warm-up effectively?
-
Do I know the purpose of today’s session?
DURING THE SET
-
Am I listening to feedback and applying it?
-
Am I holding my skills when I’m tired?
-
Is my effort matched to the purpose of each set?
AFTER THE SESSION
-
What did I do well today?
-
What is one thing I can improve next time?
-
Have I completed my post-pool stretches and started to refuel?
These everyday habits form the behavioural standard that underpins progression, recognition and long-term development within the club.
How this fits within the Optimal Athlete Development Framework
The Train Like a Pro standard sits within the wider Optimal Athlete Development Framework (OADF), which Bluefins adopts to guide long-term swimmer development.
The OADF provides a nationally recognised structure for developing swimmers over time. It focuses on building the person, the athlete and the performer, supporting safe, age-appropriate progression by prioritising behaviours, skills and readiness rather than rushing outcomes or chasing short-term results.
At Basingstoke Bluefins, our pathways are informed by and aligned with the Optimal Athlete Development Framework recognised by Aquatics GB and Swim England. This helps ensure swimmers progress through training and competition in a way that is structured, age-appropriate and sustainable.
What is the OADF?
The OADF is a long-term development model designed to support young athletes through the key stages of growth, learning and performance.
In swimming, it reinforces a simple principle:
-
Strong foundations come before high performance.
-
Progress is guided not just by times but by readiness.
What the Framework Prioritises
The OADF supports swimmer development through four clear priorities:
-
Technical skill first
Stroke efficiency, turns, streamlining and good habits come before increased intensity. -
Gradual training progression
Volume and workload increase only when the swimmer is physically, technically and developmentally ready. -
Healthy long-term development
Pathway decisions are made to reduce injury risk, burnout and early over-specialisation. -
The complete athlete
Swimming success depends on consistency, focus, behaviour and learning over time, not short-term results.
What This Means at Bluefins
For our Age Group swimmers, the OADF ensures that development is earned and supported step by step.
Progression through squads is based on:
-
Skill level and technical control
-
Training engagement and attitude
-
The ability to handle training demands independently
-
Long-term potential, not early speed alone
The OADF in practice fits around the following;
The Person → turning up prepared and focused, including land warm-up
The Athlete → training skills with the right effort
The Performer → executing with purpose, reflecting and recovering through stretching and refuelling
This approach builds swimmers who improve year after year, not swimmers pushed too far too soon.
