Masters relay racing combines individual performance with collective execution. Each swim contributes to a shared result, where pacing, order and consistency across all four legs determine performance. A recent BBC South report highlighted a standout story from within the Bluefins community. At 49, Bluefins Masters swimmer Martin Bennell has qualified for the GB Aquatics Championships in the 50m breaststroke, returning to national competition for the first time in 26 years. His last appearance came in 2000. Next month, he will race alongside the country’s best, including Olympic champion Adam Peaty.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers, coaches and volunteers who contributed to this outstanding achievement. Basingstoke Bluefins finished 2nd overall at the 2026 Hampshire County Championships, the strongest result in the club’s history. It reflects the collective effort of swimmers in the water and dedicated coaches guiding the programme, supported by the wider Bluefins community. In recent seasons the club has built steady momentum across the pathway.

Bluefins 15yrs and over swimmers produced finalists across all stroke disciplines, with podium finishes secured in both individual and relay events across the Youth Championships. Finals representation spanned sprint freestyle, 50m stroke events, 100m all strokes, 200m stroke races, medley events and distance freestyle.

Understanding the higher entry standards As swimmers progress through competitive swimming, questions naturally shift from “What are Counties?” to “What comes next?” For many swimmers, that next step is the Swim England South East Region Long Course Championships — often referred to simply as Regionals. For 2026, the entry standards are faster than in previous seasons.
