BBC South Feature - March 2026

A recent BBC South report highlighted a standout story from within the Bluefins community.

At 49, Bluefins Masters swimmer Martin Bennell has qualified for the GB Aquatics Championships in the 50m breaststroke, returning to national competition for the first time in 26 years.

His last appearance came in 2000. Next month, he will race alongside the country’s best, including Olympic champion Adam Peaty.

Martin’s return to the sport began through Masters swimming at Bluefins. Since then, he has rebuilt his performance through consistent training, attention to detail and gradual improvement. In 2025, that work delivered three gold medals at the Masters World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

His current qualifying time is faster than when he last competed at this level, showing what long-term development can achieve.

“Age is just a number.”

His story is already influencing others. Parents and former swimmers are returning to the water, encouraged by what is possible.

“Never give up.”

Swimming is a sport many leave in their teenage years. Martin’s journey shows that the pathway does not end there. There is always a route back, whether through Masters, fitness swimming or a renewed competitive focus.

For Bluefins, this reflects the purpose of the programme. Development does not stop at a certain age. It continues across the lifespan, from first strokes to national competition and beyond.
