Volunteering at Basingstoke Bluefins
Every training session, every licensed meet and every competition weekend relies on volunteers who organise, officiate, coach and coordinate. Most are parents. Some are Masters swimmers. Others once swam here themselves. They step forward because they care about how the club is delivered and how it represents itself.
Their involvement allows squads across Skills Academy, Competitive, County, Performance, Fitness, Junior Masters, Masters, Water Polo and inclusive swimming to run smoothly. It frees coaches to focus on technical delivery and ensures competitions are delivered to the right standard.
Swimmers and players compete in the water. Volunteers make the wider structure work.
What That Means in Practice
When a swimmer achieves a County qualifying time, the result stands because trained officials delivered the meet correctly and in line with Swim England regulations. Officiating safeguards fairness and ensures that standards are applied consistently.
When a race weekend feels organised and steady, it reflects the preparation of Team Managers who have coordinated entries, reporting and communication.
When technical standards remain aligned across squads, it is because coaches, including volunteers, prepare thoroughly and continue developing their knowledge.
Much of this work is not visible, yet it underpins the quality and credibility of the programme.
Opportunities to Get Involved
There is no expectation that every member volunteers. For those who would like to become more involved, structured pathways and mentoring are in place.
Officiating
Officials judge strokes and turns, support timing and assist with meet administration. Training routes are clear and mentoring is provided through each stage of accreditation.
Sarah coordinates the officials group and supports new volunteers through qualification.

Team Managers
Team Managers organise swimmers at competitions, manage communication and provide structure on poolside. Their role ensures race days run smoothly and that swimmers are informed and prepared.
Kat coordinates Team Managers and supports volunteers as they learn how competition weekends operate.

Junior Volunteer Coaching
Swimmers aged 14+ can assist lead coaches across development, inclusive, fitness and water polo squads. This pathway provides early leadership experience and can progress towards formal coaching qualifications.
Spencer supports junior volunteers through mentoring and funded CPD training towards Level 1 qualifications.

Coaching
Volunteer coaches deliver sessions across every pathway. Many began as swimmers or junior helpers before progressing through supported qualifications.

A Club Shaped by Its People
Bluefins includes members who contribute in different ways. Some volunteer regularly. Some assist occasionally. Others support from the stands. Each form of involvement strengthens the stability and identity of the club.
For those interested in becoming more involved, guidance and mentoring are available.
Volunteers rarely seek attention. They ensure the club operates properly and that standards remain consistent. That contribution continues to shape Bluefins year after year.
