Quick Dip: How Do I Get Ready Between My Races?
A short read for the car journey Category: Meet Preparation | Read time: Under 2 minutes
Between races, you need to recover from one swim and prepare for the next. The length of the gap changes what is useful.
Check in with your coach after racing. If a swim-down pool is available, follow your swim-down instructions rather than adding extra hard lengths.
Dry off and put on dry club clothing and poolside shoes. Sitting in wet kit can leave you cold. Adjust your clothing if the poolside is hot, so you stay comfortable.
With a short gap, have a drink, keep your hat and goggles ready and check when to go to marshalling. Avoid rushing around or trying to fit in a large meal.
With a longer gap, there may be time to eat and enjoy a quiet activity. After sitting, a short, familiar warm-up can help you get warmer and move freely again. Use the routine agreed for you, leaving enough time to reach marshalling without rushing.
Watch the event order, as estimated race times can change. Your Team Manager can help you follow the programme. Tell them before leaving the team area, including for the toilet.
Before your next race, check your event, kit and one thing to concentrate on. That might be keeping your head still when breathing or holding your streamline after each turn.
Before leaving the meet, collect your bottle and belongings.
Ask your coach: After a long break, which warm-up movements would help me get ready to race again?
