Worrying about a period leak can make you feel unsure about swimming.

You can talk it through with a parent or carer before you go. Explain what worries you most: choosing a product, knowing when to change it or what to do if you notice a leak.

A simple plan can help:

  • Use a period product suitable for swimming that you feel comfortable using. Follow its instructions, including when to change it.

  • Give yourself time to check before getting in and after your swim. Ordinary sanitary pads are for use out of the water.

  • Keep spare products and underwear in your swim bag so you can change if needed.

If you need to check or change, tell your coach or Team Manager. You can ask to speak quietly.

If you notice a leak, take time to change your product and any affected clothing. You do not need to apologise or explain it to your lane.

At Bluefins, we keep a small box of period products in the office for girls who need them. A coach or Team Manager can help you find it.

A friend you trust can come with you when you ask.

Ask a parent or carer: Can we make a plan so I know what to use and what to do if I need to change at swimming?
