Quick Dip: How Can I Become More Independent at Swimming?

A short read for the car journey

How much of your swimming preparation do you do yourself? A parent might organise the journey, but there are plenty of jobs you can learn to handle.

Take care of your swimming things from start to finish. Pack and carry your bag, then empty it when you get home. Put wet towels and swimwear out to dry or into the wash as appropriate. Doing both ends of the job helps you know where everything is for next time.

Help prepare what you need to eat and drink. Fill your bottle and pack the snack you have agreed with your parent or carer. You could also learn to prepare a simple breakfast, such as cereal and milk, before an early session.

Know what you are swimming at a meet. Look through your events beforehand so you know the strokes and distances. Follow your Team Manager’s instructions and be ready when your race is called.

Speak to your coach yourself before and after racing. Afterwards, describe your experience: “I felt strong until the last length,” or “I got too close to the wall at my turn.” Your coach can connect what you felt with what they saw.

Choose one job that an adult currently does for you and ask them to show you how. Keep doing it until it becomes part of your routine.

You can still ask for help. The aim is to do more of the things you are ready to manage.

Ask a parent or carer: Which swimming job can I take over this week?
