Quick Dip: Can I Swim and Race When I Have My Period?
A short read for the car journey

Yes. You can train and race when you have your period. Having a period is a normal part of growing up and it does not mean that you have to miss swimming.
Some swimmers notice very little difference. Others may have cramps, which can feel like pain in the lower tummy. You might also feel tired, have a headache or feel less comfortable than usual. How you feel can change from one period to the next.
Products that can be used in the water include period swimwear, specific period pants designed for swimming, tampons and menstrual cups. An ordinary pad cannot be used in the pool.
Ask a parent or carer to help you choose what feels right for you.
If you want to wear period pants under your race suit, speak to your coach or Team Manager before the meet. Swim England allows specific period pants at competitions held under its rules, but a full second swimming costume is not allowed. Your coach or Team Manager can check the latest rules and any form that may be needed.
If you have period pain or do not feel able to complete the session, tell your coach. You could say, “I have period pain today.” This helps your coach understand how you feel and change part of the session if needed. Your coach should protect your privacy and treat you with respect.
If period pain or very heavy bleeding regularly stops you from swimming, attending school or doing normal activities, tell a parent or carer. They can help you speak to a doctor or nurse.
You do not have to manage your period on your own.
Ask a parent or carer: Can we make a small period pack for my swimming bag?
