Swimming for Fitness, Confidence and Wellbeing
At Bluefins, not every swimmer is working towards competition and that’s an important part of who we are as a club. Many swimmers simply want to stay active, improve their fitness and enjoy being in the water.
Our Club Fitness squads provide a structured, coached environment for swimmers who want exactly that, without the expectations that come with racing.
This pathway continues to grow, with over 60 swimmers now training regularly in Club 1 and Club 2. It has become a key part of the club, supporting swimmers who want consistency, fitness and confidence in the water, and who want to feel part of a club environment.
We’re seeing more swimmers move on from lessons into fitness and skill development, reflecting a wider shift in how people are thinking about health, fitness and long-term wellbeing.
In response, we’ve aligned our coaching team to this pathway, with coaches who specialise in stroke development and who understand how to engage and support teenage swimmers.
Moving On from Lessons
For many swimmers, lessons are a strong starting point but not the right long-term environment. As swimmers get older, mixed age groups and wide ability ranges can make it harder to find consistency and appropriate challenge within a single session.
Club sessions introduce a more consistent structure, clearer expectations and regular coaching input. This helps swimmers settle into a routine, build confidence and continue improving in a more focused environment.
Club 1 and Club 2
The pathway is simple and designed to match age, confidence and experience.
Club Fitness 1 (11–13/14)
A starting point for swimmers moving on from lessons or returning to the pool. Swimmers are grouped in similar age ranges, which helps sessions feel consistent and appropriate.
Focus:
Stroke development
Basic fitness
Confidence in the water
Enjoyment and routine
Club Fitness 2 (13+)
For swimmers who are confident in the water and ready to build stronger fitness and consistency.
Focus:
Aerobic fitness
Stroke efficiency
Training habits
Personal challenge
Sessions remain supportive and relaxed, with swimmers gradually taking more ownership of their training.
What Swimmers Gain
This is not a competitive squad, but it is still coached and purposeful.
Swimmers build confidence in the water, improve fitness and stamina, develop better technique and control and establish consistent routines.
For many, it becomes part of their week and something they enjoy and stick with.
Why It Matters
Swimming is one of the few sports people can do for life.
Not every swimmer needs or wants a competitive pathway to benefit from it.
For many teenagers in particular, having a consistent and positive environment to stay active makes a real difference, physically, mentally and socially.
This pathway allows swimmers to stay involved in the sport in a way that works for them.
Skills and Focus Areas
Sessions are structured and purposeful, with a clear focus on how swimmers move and feel in the water.
Across both Club 1 and Club 2, we regularly work on:
Set, Drop, Lock, Push to build good habits from the wall
Streamline and body position to hold shape through the water
Stroke technique and timing to improve efficiency across all strokes
Drills and skill work to break down movements and build control
Consistent swimming to learn pacing and hold effort
These skills underpin everything we do, helping swimmers move better, feel more confident and get more from each session.
It’s not just about swimming lengths, it’s about learning how to swim well.
Coaching Principle
Structure creates engagement.
Even without competition, swimmers get more from sessions that are planned, coached and consistent.
Who This Pathway Is For
These squads are designed for swimmers who:
Have finished lessons
Want to stay active
Enjoy swimming without competing
Some swimmers love racing. Others simply enjoy swimming, and both are completely valid.
A strong club makes space for both and gets the environment right for each swimmer. For many families, this provides a clear and positive next step in the sport.
If swimmers develop and want to explore other pathways later, coaches will always guide the right next step.
Places are limited, but we’re always happy to support families with advice.
