Years in Swimming

“I have been involved in coaching for over 45 years and swimming for 55 years, initially when swimming with my first club, Croydon Amphibians, then both as a volunteer and professional coach.”

Coaching Background

I started coaching full time with Basingstoke Swimming Club in 1989 following several voluntary coaching roles.

During my first period with the club I took Basingstoke to consistently placing second in the county championships behind Portsmouth Northsea who were at the time the top club in the UK. Throughout my tenure Basingstoke Swimming Club produced county, regional and national swimmers.

I took a career break to spend more time with my family in 2005 but returned as a squad coach in 2011 when my daughter was swimming with the club. Moving away when my children were accepted at Portsmouth Grammar School.

I started tutoring with the ASA in 1991 and have been involved in developing the ASA education programme for coaches, together with co-authoring a coaching manual. I currently deliver ASA Assistant Coach, Club Coach and am a Mentor Assessor on the Senior Coach Programme.

Coaches that Inspired me

  • Charles Wilson  – My senior coach tutor. For challenging my knowledge and practical application.

  • Richard Quick and Skip Kenny - (Olympic Coaches) – Whilst visiting Stanford University, USA, I had the pleasure of watching these great coaches work with swimmers from Olympian to junior swimmer with the same care and enthusiasm.

  • Bill Furniss (Olympic Coach to Rebecca Adlington) – The trait of single-minded determination has never seemed stronger than with Bill, who I regard as a friend and inspiration.

  • Every coach I have ever worked – has inspired me to be a better version of what I am and some of those are part of the coaching Team at Bluefins.

Favourite Set

As a swimmer ‘the stand up, get out swim’ - my coach would challenge us to get within 3% of our personal best time, with the reward being to go home early, I averaged more than 50% success!
As a coach, back-end speed, pre-exhaust, race sets working on stroke rate and strict pace.
