Years in Swimming

Swimming and Coaching Background

I made the transition into coaching at the age of 16 starting with the development squads and quickly realised I was very passionate about coaching! Again I gained my level 1 and 2 coaching swimming certificates and have progressed to my current post of Lead Squad 4 coach. I am a swimmer myself and currently swim in the Bluefins Masters Squad, with my biggest achievement here being my Gold Medal at the Masters British Championships in 2019 for my 200m Breaststroke, although my favourite events to race are the relays! 

Coaches that Inspired me

  • Steve Greenfield: Steve was great at inspiring me as I began my coaching journey, I know I can ask him for advice any time. Steve helped me develop my two coaching philosophies, firstly to make sure swimmers are having an enjoyable time and secondly to instill understanding. 

  •  Brendan Giltinane: Brendan has been a big part of my swimming journey, from teaching me to swim, to being my coach, and then to swimming and pushing me in the pool as a fellow master swimmer. I learned a lot here about how to push swimmers to get the best out of them and how to motivate them to swim their best. 

Favourite Set

Favourite set to swim myself is 30 X 50m where every 3rd is Max, this set really works for me and helps me to develop some speed. 


Other than that any set that includes Breaststroke – as it is the best stroke! 


My favourite sets to coach are skills sets where we develop and improve technique with the swimmers and go on to see some really improvements when we put this into practice. I love seeing swimmers work hard on their drills and then their swimming improving.

Best Advice

Spend some time working out what you want as a swimmer, what would make you happy? What would be your ideal achievement? Then work out how to get there, set small targets and goals. Remember what you want to achieve may be different to another swimmers, or in fact your parents. It is a “personal prize” for you to aim for. Remember your aim/goal/ideal achievement when training gets tough and it will help you through.
